This Craftsman-style home needed a backyard transformation to create more functional, level spaces for entertaining while maintaining the home’s architectural charm. The existing layout featured a small patio with unstable, dated bricks and overgrown landscaping. With the space in need of a fresh start, we removed everything – with the exception of a mature tree, which we trimmed to allow more light into the space – and began with a blank canvas to transform the backyard into a beautiful and practical retreat.

To enhance accessibility and functionality, we expanded the patio and replaced the outdated surfaces with stepping stones and a newly poured concrete slab, which was saw-cut in a diamond pattern for added texture and visual interest. The step leading to the house was resized for easier access, and the entire layout was regraded to ensure proper drainage away from the home. A retaining wall was introduced to define the space and elevate the terrain, improving both the design and drainage. To maintain the Craftsman charm while modernizing the space, we added custom planter boxes filled with a blend of flowers and greenery, which not only defined the different areas but also acted as guardrails, seamlessly transitioning between the various elevations.

To support the new design, we repaired the existing irrigation system and installed a drip irrigation system tailored specifically for the planter boxes. For the smaller remaining lawn area, we chose artificial turf to provide a clean, low maintenance solution that perfectly complements the modernized backyard while eliminating the upkeep demands of natural grass.

The result is a backyard that is both practical and inviting, with expanded entertaining space, improved drainage, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Thoughtfully designed for gatherings and everyday enjoyment, this transformation successfully blends modern functionality with timeless Craftsman charm.
